Choosing your Doula: I will come to your home or meet you at a place of your choice for a free consultation/visit and talk with you about how I can help you before, during and after birth. You are free to ask all the questions you like to help you make your decision.
Pre-Natal Visits:
I like to meet with you and your birthing partner at least twice before labor to become better acquainted, to explore and discuss your birth plan, priorities, any fears or concerns, and to plan how we might best work together. I welcome the opportunity to meet with your physician or midwife at a regular scheduled prenatal visit. We might decide on more meetings and will remain in touch by telephone on a more frequent basis as your birth approaches.
Availability:
I will be on call for you 24 hours a day beginning two weeks before your estimated due date. You are also welcome to call me any time after your baby is born with any questions or concerns. You will have my telephone number as well as a cell phone number to reach me at all times. I will inform you of times when I am unavailable for labor support or let you know of my availability. I will do everything possible to stay completely available for the birth of your baby. In the rare case I am not available my back up will be on call for you.
When you are in labor:
I prefer that you call me when you think you are in labor, even if you don’t need me. I can answer questions and make suggestions over the telephone. It also gives me time to call the baby sitter. We will decide if I should meet you then or wait for further change. (I prefer at least one hour to get to you from the time you ask me to come, depending on where you live or to arrive at the hospital). We will decide where to meet—at the hospital or at your home. Always try to reach me first via my telephone and then call my cell phone if you get my machine at home. Please leave messages at all my contact numbers.
If for any reason I can not come to assist you my back up doula, Heather Hill, CLD ( www.freewebs.com/wingedheartdoula/ )will come to your assistance until I get there.
After your birth:
I usually remain with you after your birth until the room is all cleared out and it looks like you are comfortable and your family is ready for quiet time together. I can also help with initial breast-feeding, if needed. I am available for telephone contact to answer questions about the birth of your baby and would like to get together with you again at least once to review your birth, see your baby and get comments from you about my role.
